Ayahuasca Vs Other Psychedelics: What The Vine Changes

Ayahuasca vs other psychedelics: caapi vine, chacruna and brew beside dried mushrooms, San Pedro and ergot rye

Ayahuasca vs other psychedelics comes down to 1 extra plant. Psilocybin, LSD and mescaline all work when you swallow them. The DMT in ayahuasca doesn’t, so the brew needs a second plant, the Banisteriopsis caapi vine, to keep your body from breaking it down. That vine explains most of what sets ayahuasca apart: the drug-interaction risk and the medical screening. It doesn’t explain the length. In a 2023 trial that timed 3 psychedelics in the same people, LSD lasted 8.2 hours on average and mescaline 11.1. Ayahuasca’s effects were gone by 4 hours in a 2001 lab study.

I co-founded Cusco Ayahuasca Retreats with Maestro Don Julio Quispe Condori in 2017, and the only psychedelic we serve is ayahuasca. So I have a side in this. I’d also never taken a psychedelic before my first ceremony in March 2014. Everything below about mushrooms and LSD comes from research and from what our screening sees, not from my own nights.

What Makes Ayahuasca Different from Other Psychedelics?

Ayahuasca is the one common psychedelic that needs 2 plants to work. The second plant changes how the drug moves through your body, and it adds risks the others don’t carry.

Ayahuasca is a brew of 2 Amazonian plants. Psychotria viridis leaves supply DMT. The Banisteriopsis caapi vine supplies harmala alkaloids, which block MAO-A, an enzyme in your gut and liver that would otherwise break DMT down before it reaches the brain. Psilocybin, LSD and mescaline need no such help. All 4 act mainly on the brain’s 5-HT2A serotonin receptor.

Blocking MAO-A does 2 jobs. It lets the DMT work when you drink it. It also slows the breakdown of serotonin, the brain chemical that SSRI antidepressants raise, and that second job is why this page has a whole section on medication.

Brews also vary in a way lab drugs don’t. Some centers add other plants, such as toé, a relative of datura. Ours is the vine and the chacruna leaf, cooked by Don Julio and Maestro Esteban, and nothing else.

Ayahuasca vs Other Psychedelics, Side by Side

All 5 of the psychedelics compared here act on the same receptor. They differ on 3 things: whether they work when swallowed on their own, how long they last, and which medications they clash with.

Lengths for psilocybin, LSD and mescaline: Ley and colleagues, Neuropsychopharmacology, 2023. Ayahuasca: Riba and colleagues, Psychopharmacology, 2001. Medication mixes: Malcolm and Lee, The Mental Health Clinician, 2017; Nayak and colleagues, Pharmacopsychiatry, 2021. LSD’s origin: the US Drug Enforcement Administration.

Look at the length row. Ayahuasca sits at the short end with psilocybin, and LSD runs up to twice as long. Where ayahuasca stands apart is the last row.

Mescaline lasts the longest of the 5. San Pedro, the Andean cactus that carries it, grows on our land, and we still don’t serve it. Our San Pedro comparison explains why, with timings dose by dose.

Ketamine often turns up in these comparisons. It’s a dissociative anesthetic that works through a different mechanism, so we compared it with ayahuasca on its own page.

Is Ayahuasca a Psychedelic?

Yes, by its chemistry. A 2017 systematic review of human studies on ayahuasca, DMT and psychosis concluded that ayahuasca shares, at least in part, the 5-HT2A mechanism of LSD, psilocybin and mescaline.

The people who serve it here see it differently. Don Julio trained for 12 years in San Martin in vegetalismo, an Amazonian healing tradition. In it, the healer’s songs, called icaros, are the main healing tool, and the brew opens the door. A ceremony here has 3 healers singing over at most 14 guests in the dark. After 9 years and more than 700 ceremonies, I think “psychedelic” describes the chemistry and misses the room.

The tradition is old, though not as old as most retreat sites say. The oldest chemical evidence of the 2 ayahuasca ingredients together comes from a 1,000-year-old bundle found in a cave in southwestern Bolivia and described in PNAS in 2019. The researchers couldn’t tell whether its owner drank the plants or took them as snuff. A 2017 pharmacology review in The Mental Health Clinician dates Amazonian ritual use to hundreds of years. I haven’t found a source for “thousands.”

How Long Each One Lasts

Ayahuasca is one of the shorter classic psychedelics. In lab studies, its effects peak 1 to 2 hours after you drink and fade by about 4 hours. LSD averages about 8 hours and mescaline about 11.

The cleanest comparison comes from Switzerland. In a 2023 head-to-head trial at University Hospital Basel, published in Neuropsychopharmacology, the same healthy volunteers took LSD, psilocybin and mescaline in separate sessions. Effects lasted 8.2 hours on average for LSD, 4.9 for psilocybin and 11.1 for mescaline. At the doses tested, the 3 experiences scored about the same on standard questionnaires. The clearest difference was length.

Ayahuasca wasn’t in that trial. Its timing comes from placebo-controlled studies by Jordi Riba’s team in Barcelona. In their 2001 study, effects started 30 to 60 minutes after drinking, peaked at 1 to 2 hours and were gone by 4. Their 2003 study put the peak at 1.5 to 2 hours. Smoked DMT runs the other way: with no vine to slow it, the experience is over in minutes.

What makes an ayahuasca night long is the ceremony. The 2017 review notes that ceremonies are held at night and outlast the drug’s effects by hours. Ours open at 8:30 PM, and Don Julio serves the first cups between 8:45 and 9:00. Around 10:30 he offers a second cup, and he turns down about 20% of requests for it. He closes at 3:00 AM. That’s 6.5 hours of ceremony, on 4 nights out of 12. We broke the night into 3 separate clocks on another page.

Something we see at 2,900 m: the brew comes on 15 to 20 minutes slower than it does at sea level. That’s our observation over 9 years, and as far as I know, no study has tested it.

Why the Vine Raises the Drug-Interaction Risk

The vine blocks MAO-A, and MAO-A also breaks down serotonin. Mix that with a drug that raises serotonin, such as an SSRI antidepressant, and the 2 effects stack.

The 2017 review rates ayahuasca’s interaction risk above other psychedelics’, and it puts that down to the enzyme block. It lists what to avoid: SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclic antidepressants, trazodone and St John’s wort.

The other psychedelics have a dangerous mix of their own. A 2021 analysis of online trip reports, published in Pharmacopsychiatry, linked lithium taken with classic psychedelics such as LSD and psilocybin to seizures. Lithium is on our automatic-no list too, along with pharmaceutical MAOIs.

We handle that risk at intake. Dr. Carlos Medina, our medical director, reviews every application within 72 hours. Counting every reason, we turn down 13% of applicants outright, and another 4 to 6% are accepted on conditions they never meet. SSRIs or SNRIs without a completed 6-week taper (8 weeks for fluoxetine) mean an automatic no. That taper is planned with your own prescriber and Dr. Medina. Don’t stop anything on your own. The taper windows for other drugs are on our preparation page.

We learned this the hard way. In 2018, before we had a doctor, I accepted a guest on a low dose of sertraline because she said she’d skip some doses. That night her heart rate stayed high for hours, with agitation and tremors, and the altitude made it worse. I sat with her until morning. She recovered. Within 2 months Dr. Medina had joined us, and we’d rebuilt screening from scratch.

This page is general information. It isn’t medical advice, and only your prescriber can tell you how to change a medication safely.

Why Does Ayahuasca Make You Throw Up?

Vomiting is the most common physical effect of ayahuasca. In the largest survey of drinkers, 62.0% reported vomiting or nausea.

That survey, the Global Ayahuasca Survey, was published in PLOS Global Public Health in 2022 and drew on 10,836 people. Of the 8,216 who answered its questions on physical effects, 69.9% reported at least 1 and 62.0% reported vomiting or nausea. Of the 5,775 who answered a question on medical care, 2.3% said a physical effect had needed it. The 2017 review says plainly that the body tolerates ayahuasca poorly, and that nausea, vomiting and diarrhea are common.

Why it happens is less settled than retreat sites suggest. Some say the vine causes it. I haven’t seen a primary study that shows that, so I won’t claim it. The tradition calls it la purga and treats it as part of the healing.

In our maloca, the purge usually lasts 30 to 90 minutes in the first half of the night and eases with each ceremony. On night 1 at 2,900 m it can hit harder, because your body is handling the altitude too. That’s why physical preparation at altitude starts weeks before you fly. By the 3rd or 4th ceremony someone purges, someone laughs, and the room fills with stifled giggles. David Ashworth, our head facilitator, calls it the purge giggle.

I haven’t found a survey of mushroom or LSD users on this scale that measures vomiting the same way. So the table above has no matching number for them. The purge is also a big part of how night 1 differs from night 4.

Is Ayahuasca More Dangerous Than Mushrooms or LSD?

It carries 2 risks the others mostly don’t: the medication interactions and the physical strain of purging. On psychosis, the research doesn’t single it out.

The 2017 systematic review on ayahuasca, DMT and psychosis found that controlled and ritual use of ayahuasca isn’t usually linked to psychotic episodes. It describes the same picture for LSD and psilocybin in experimental settings. Hard weeks afterward are common, though. In the Global Ayahuasca Survey, 55.4% of the 7,839 who answered its mental health questions reported an adverse effect in the weeks or months after drinking. Of those, 87.6% saw it as part of growth or integration.

We screen for the rest. Schizophrenia, any history of psychosis and bipolar I are automatic no’s here, and since 2022 we also ask about psychiatric illness in parents and siblings. Altitude adds conditions a jungle center doesn’t have to check, which is why our exclusion list covers heart, lung and blood conditions too.

Across about 2,000 guests and more than 700 ceremonies since 2017, we’ve had no deaths and 1 medical evacuation, for a cardiac event in 2022. That guest made a full recovery, and we now require an ECG for guests over 45.

What the Evidence Says About Depression and Anxiety

Ayahuasca has less trial evidence than its marketing suggests: 1 published randomized controlled trial in depression, with 29 patients. A 2023 review also didn’t find the short-term drop in anxiety after ayahuasca that it found after psilocybin, LSD and 5-MeO-DMT.

That trial was published in Psychological Medicine in 2019. By day 7, 64% of patients on ayahuasca had responded, against 27% on placebo, and the trial stopped measuring there.

The 2023 review, in Therapeutic Advances in Psychopharmacology, pulled together 48 studies of the days and weeks after a psychedelic. It reports anxiety falling after psilocybin, LSD and 5-MeO-DMT, and it states that it didn’t find this after ayahuasca. We went through the afterglow research study by study on another page.

Our own numbers come with a warning label. Since 2020, guests fill in the PHQ-9 depression questionnaire at intake, on day 12 and at 3 months. Across about 310 guests with all 3 scores, the average fell from 12.1 to 6.4 by day 12 and sat at 6.3 at 3 months. 71% kept their improvement and 29% didn’t. These are people who chose to come and chose to answer, so a trial would hold the numbers to a higher bar.

If you’re struggling right now, talk to a doctor or a crisis line in your country first. A retreat is no place for an active crisis, and we turn away anyone with active suicidal thoughts and a plan.

Where Ayahuasca Is Legal in 2026

In Peru, the knowledge and traditional uses of ayahuasca by native Amazonian communities were declared part of the nation’s cultural heritage on 24 June 2008. In the US, DMT is a Schedule I drug under federal law, and only specific churches have won a federal right to drink ayahuasca.

Peru’s National Institute of Culture made that declaration in Resolución Directoral Nacional 836/INC, as the state news agency reported at the time. The resolution separates traditional use from decontextualized, commercial Western use. Ceremonies sold to visitors, ours included, sit on the commercial side of that line. It’s a heritage declaration, and I’m not a lawyer.

Under US federal law, DMT, psilocybin and LSD all sit in Schedule I. The União do Vegetal church won the right to use ayahuasca at the Supreme Court in 2006. A Santo Daime church won a similar ruling in Oregon in 2009. Colorado voters decriminalized personal use of DMT by adults in 2022, which doesn’t change federal law. Check your own country’s law before you travel, and don’t carry brew across a border.

If You’ve Taken Mushrooms or LSD Before

Your experience helps less than you’d expect. What catches experienced guests off guard is the purge, the dark, the singing and the 4 nights.

First-time ayahuasca guests often expect it to look like their past trips: visuals and euphoria. Ceremonies here often bring physical discomfort, hard emotions and long stretches of waiting instead. Guests tell us they wish they’d known how boring the first 30 to 60 minutes can be, and that night 1 might bring nothing at all.

You don’t need psychedelic experience to come. I had none. After about 2,000 guests, I’ve seen that the ones who struggle most are the rigid ones, with tight control and an answer for everything. Willingness predicts more than any diagnosis.

Patricia Rojas, our senior facilitator, interviews every applicant on a 30 to 45 minute video call. She always asks the same question: tell me about the worst psychological experience you’ve ever had, and what helped you come out of it. If that was a bad trip, say so.

And we won’t stack medicines. Don Julio’s reason: “You do not study two languages in the same classroom at the same time.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Ayahuasca vs Other Psychedelics: What’s the Main Difference?

Ayahuasca is a brew of 2 plants, and its DMT works when swallowed only because the caapi vine blocks the MAO-A enzyme. A 2017 pharmacology review says that block gives ayahuasca a higher risk of drug interactions than other psychedelics. Its effects were gone by 4 hours in a 2001 lab study, while LSD averaged 8.2 hours in a 2023 trial.

Ayahuasca vs Other Psychedelics: Which Lasts Longest?

Mescaline does, at 11.1 hours on average in a 2023 head-to-head trial, followed by LSD at 8.2 hours and psilocybin at 4.9. In a 2001 lab study, ayahuasca’s effects peaked at 1 to 2 hours and were gone by 4. Smoked DMT is over in minutes.

Is Ayahuasca Stronger Than Mushrooms?

We know of no trial that compares them directly. In a 2023 trial of LSD, psilocybin and mescaline, the 3 scored about the same at the doses tested, and length was the clearest difference. Ayahuasca adds the purge and the medication rules, which is part of why it can feel like more.

Can I Drink Ayahuasca If I Take Antidepressants?

Not while you’re on an SSRI or SNRI. At our center they need a completed 6-week taper, or 8 weeks for fluoxetine, planned with your prescriber and our medical director. The vine’s MAO-A block can stack with them. Never stop a medication on your own.

What’s the Difference Between Ayahuasca and DMT?

Ayahuasca contains DMT, but you drink it with the caapi vine, which keeps the DMT from being broken down and stretches the effects to about 4 hours. Pure DMT is smoked or injected and is over in minutes. The vine also brings the purge and the drug interactions.

Do I Need Experience with Other Psychedelics Before Ayahuasca?

No. I had never taken a psychedelic before my first ceremony in 2014. Across about 2,000 guests, willingness has mattered more than anything on an application.

If you’re weighing ayahuasca vs other psychedelics because of something you’re carrying, start with your medications. Apply for screening, list every one of them, and Dr. Medina will tell you what applies to you.
