How Long Does Ayahuasca Last? The 3 Clocks
Ayahuasca lasts 4 to 6 hours. That is the active drug effect. The peak lands 1.5 to 2 hours after you drink, which is what Jordi Riba and colleagues measured in a double-blind placebo-controlled trial of 18 volunteers published in the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics.
That number answers the smallest of the 3 questions people are actually asking. The night in the maloca runs longer than the drug does. And whether anything changed gets settled over months, not hours.
We have run more than 700 ceremonies at 2,900 meters in Peru’s Sacred Valley since 2017. Here is what each of the 3 clocks reads.
How Long Does Ayahuasca Last?
Ayahuasca lasts 4 to 6 hours from the first effects to the return to baseline. Onset takes 20 to 60 minutes. The peak arrives 1.5 to 2 hours after drinking and holds for roughly 2 hours. Physical after-effects such as tiredness can run into the next day.
You will see 4 to 8 hours on other retreat sites, and 12 hours on a few. The wider numbers are not measurements. They are guesses that got copied. The 4 to 6 hour figure comes from controlled trials, and a 2020 review in the journal Pharmaceuticals by Brito-da-Costa and colleagues puts the hallucinogenic state at roughly 4 to 6 hours, with DMT reaching peak plasma levels 1.5 to 1.8 hours after an oral dose.
The 3 Clocks Nobody Separates
There are 3 different clocks running, and every article we have read collapses them into one. They measure different things and they disagree with each other by orders of magnitude.
| Clock | What it measures | How long | Where the number comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drug clock | Active effects of the brew | 4 to 6 hours | Controlled trials, Riba 2003 |
| Room clock | Time in the ceremony space | 7 hours, 8:00 PM to 3:00 AM | Our ceremony log |
| Outcome clock | Whether anything changed | Measured at 3 months | Our PHQ-9 and PCL-5 data |
Most people search for the first one and make a decision based on it. The third one is the only clock that tells you whether the money and the vomiting were worth it.
The Drug Clock: What the Trials Measured
The drug clock runs 4 to 6 hours, with the peak at 1.5 to 2 hours. Those numbers come from lab conditions, and knowing the conditions matters.
In the 2003 trial, 18 volunteers who had used psychedelics before swallowed freeze-dried ayahuasca in capsules at 0.6 and 0.85 mg of DMT per kilogram of body weight. Subjective effects peaked between 1.5 and 2 hours. Blood DMT peaked at the same time, with a median time to maximum concentration of 1.5 hours at both doses. Diastolic blood pressure rose by 9 mm Hg at 75 minutes on the higher dose.
So the number everyone quotes describes experienced volunteers taking capsules in a hospital. It is not a description of a ceremony night, and it does not predict anything about outcome. That is where the figure stops being useful, and nobody selling retreats says so.
How Long Does It Take to Kick In, and When Does It Peak?
Onset runs 20 to 60 minutes at sea level. The peak arrives 1.5 to 2 hours after drinking. The 4 alkaloids in the brew do not peak together, which is why the experience has a long tail.
| Compound | What it does | Time to peak in blood |
|---|---|---|
| DMT | The visionary effect | 1.5 to 1.8 hours |
| Harmine | Blocks the enzyme that would destroy DMT | 1.7 hours |
| Harmaline | Same enzyme blocking, weaker | 2.4 hours |
| Tetrahydroharmine | Mild serotonin effect, longest tail | 2.9 hours |

Those figures are from the Brito-da-Costa review, drawing on Callaway’s 1999 measurements. Look at the last row. Tetrahydroharmine peaks nearly 3 hours in, an hour and a half after the DMT peak has passed. That is the pharmacology behind the thing guests describe as coming down slowly rather than switching off.
Taken on its own, DMT is gone almost immediately. A 2025 systematic review in Clinical Pharmacokinetics covering 8 datasets found a half-life of 4.8 to 19 minutes, though every study it included used injection rather than a drink. The vine is what makes the tea last hours instead of minutes.
The Room Clock: One Ceremony Night, Hour by Hour
A ceremony night runs about 7 hours in the room, from 8:00 PM to 3:00 AM. That is 1 to 3 hours longer than the drug is active, and nobody publishes it. Here is ours.
- 4:00 PM Last meal. Quinoa, boiled potatoes, plain vegetables. No salt, no spice.
- 8:00 PM Guests take their mats. Same mat every night of the retreat.
- 8:30 PM Don Julio opens, calling the mountains around the valley by name.
- 8:45 PM Medicine is served, one guest at a time. First-night doses run 40 to 60 ml.
- 9:00 PM The candle goes out.
- 9:00 to 9:30 PM Nothing happens. This is the part guests say they wish someone had warned them about.
- 9:30 PM to 12:30 AM The peak. Singing, purging, stillness. A second cup is offered around 10:30 PM.
- 12:30 to 2:30 AM The healers move mat to mat.
- 3:00 AM Candle relit, ceremony closed, warm coca tea.

Two details from that list that change what you should expect. The 30 minute wait after drinking is real and it is boring, and people who are not warned about it read the silence as a sign that they got a weak dose. And roughly 20% of second cup requests get turned down. Wanting more is not a reason to get more.
Does Altitude Change How Long Ayahuasca Lasts?
In our records, yes. Onset at 2,900 meters runs 15 to 20 minutes later than what guests with jungle experience describe, and the peak is gentler and longer. Every timeline you will find on page 1 of Google was written for a sea-level jungle center, and none of them mention altitude at all.
Two things are going on. The first is physics and you can check it: water boils at roughly 90 degrees Celsius at 2,900 meters instead of 100. That changes how the vine and the leaf extract during the cook, and it took Don Julio 2 years of adjustment to compensate. We have logged more than 120 batches since 2020 with vine weight, cook time and altitude conditions recorded.

The second is the body. At reduced oxygen, guests process the brew differently. We are careful here: this is our observation across 9 years and more than 700 ceremonies, not a published finding. No trial has tested ayahuasca at altitude. Anyone telling you otherwise is inventing it.
The practical effect is that we build 2 acclimatization days into the front of every retreat before anyone drinks, and our medical director monitors oxygen saturation through them. You can read how the screening and acclimatization work before you apply.
How Long Does Ayahuasca Stay in Your System?
Barely at all, in the form you took it. A 2012 study in Drug Testing and Analysis gave 10 volunteers 1.0 mg of DMT per kilogram and collected 24 hours of urine. Less than 1% of the DMT came out unchanged.
The rest had already been taken apart. About 50% was recovered as indole-3-acetic acid, another 10% as DMT-N-oxide, and DMT plus its metabolites reached 68% recovery. The vine alkaloids behaved less predictably, with recoveries ranging from 9% to 65%.
So “how long does it stay in your system” has 2 answers. The compound that produced the visions is gone within hours. Its breakdown products are measurable across a day.
Ayahuasca and Drug Tests: What the Excretion Data Shows
Standard workplace drug panels do not test for DMT. A 5-panel or 10-panel screen looks for cannabis, cocaine, opiates, amphetamines and PCP. DMT is not on either list, and it has to be ordered specifically.
Even when it is ordered, the 2012 excretion data explains the problem: under 1% of the dose leaves as DMT. There is very little of the parent compound to find. We are not lawyers and this is not legal advice. If you hold a security clearance or a professional licence, talk to an attorney before you book anything, anywhere.
The Outcome Clock: Our 3-Month Numbers for 2026
The clock that matters runs for months, and almost nobody measures it. Since 2020 we have collected PHQ-9 and PCL-5 scores from every guest at intake, on day 12, and again at 3 months. We have roughly 310 complete datasets.
| Measure | At intake | Day 12 | 3 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| PHQ-9 (depression) | 12.1 | 6.4 | 6.3 |
| PCL-5 (PTSD), guests above the clinical cutoff | 46.8 | Not recorded | 34.2 |
That is a 5.8 point PHQ-9 drop held at 3 months, and 71% of guests showed sustained improvement. Among guests who scored above the PTSD cutoff at intake, 65% had dropped below it by month 3.
Now the number retreat centers do not print: 29% of our guests showed no significant PHQ-9 improvement at 3 months. This is observational data with real selection bias. We are not a clinical trial. But a center that only publishes the good half of its own numbers is not publishing data, it is publishing marketing.
For scale on what people report generally, the Global Ayahuasca Survey collected answers from 10,836 people across more than 50 countries. Published in PLOS Global Public Health, it found 69.9% reported acute physical adverse effects, most commonly vomiting or nausea at 62.0%, while 2.3% needed medical attention afterward. Of the 55.9% reporting adverse mental health effects, 87.6% considered them part of a positive process, and for most the effects lasted under a week.
6 Things That Change the Length
Dose and brew strength do most of the work. The rest matters less than the internet suggests.
- Dose. Our first-night pours run 40 to 60 ml, decided per guest, not per group.
- Brew strength. Vine maturity and cook time are the 2 biggest variables in our 120 batch logs, with altitude third.
- Body weight and metabolism. Real, and the reason a fixed group dose is a bad idea.
- The 2 weeks before. No alcohol, no cannabis, no red meat, no aged cheese. Preparation is biochemistry, not gatekeeping.
- Medications. SSRIs need a minimum 6 week taper, fluoxetine 8 weeks. This is a safety issue, not a duration one.
- Altitude. Later onset, gentler and longer peak, in our records.
Set and setting shape what the hours feel like. They do not move the clock much.
How Long to Wait Between Ceremonies
We run 4 ceremonies across a 12-day retreat, on nights 4, 6, 9 and 11. The 2 day gap in the middle is deliberate, and it is the part of our schedule other operators argue with.
The industry standard is 5 to 7 ceremonies in a week. We think that is driven by what guests expect to get for their money, not by what helps. Stacking nights tires the body and flattens the returns. Don Julio puts it this way: if you drink every night, you are shouting at a river. Leave space and the river answers.
Guests sometimes ask about combining medicines in one week. We hold separate San Pedro, kambo and bufo sessions, and each one is scheduled on its own day with its own clearance, never layered onto a ceremony night. The San Pedro day runs 12 to 13 hours, which is roughly double an ayahuasca night, so it never shares a date with one.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Long Does Ayahuasca Last on Your First Night?
Expect 4 to 6 hours of active effects, with onset in the first 20 to 60 minutes and the peak between 1.5 and 2 hours. First-night doses at our center run 40 to 60 ml, which is deliberately conservative. Many guests report a quiet first night and a much stronger third.
How Long Does the Purging Last?
Typically 30 to 90 minutes, concentrated in the first half of the ceremony. It usually eases with each subsequent night. In the Global Ayahuasca Survey of 10,836 people, vomiting or nausea was the most commonly reported physical effect at 62.0%, so plan on it rather than hoping to avoid it.
Can You Sleep After an Ayahuasca Ceremony?
Some can, some cannot. Our ceremonies close at 3:00 AM and most guests sleep until 9:00 or 11:00 AM. A minority stay awake and watch the sun come up over the valley. Both are normal, and the integration circle is set at 11:00 AM for that reason.
How Long Does Ayahuasca Last in Your System After the Retreat?
The active compound clears within hours. In the 2012 urine study, less than 1% of the DMT dose was excreted unchanged and total DMT plus metabolite recovery over 24 hours reached 68%. Vine alkaloid recoveries varied widely, from 9% to 65%.
How Long Does the Afterglow Last?
Usually days to a few weeks. It is not the result. In our experience the guests who mistake the afterglow for the healing are the ones who feel flat at week 6 and conclude it did not work. The afterglow is a mood lift. What follows it is the actual work.
How Long Until You Know Whether It Worked?
Give it 3 months. That is when we re-measure, and it is when the day-12 numbers either hold or do not. Our PHQ-9 average went from 12.1 at intake to 6.4 on day 12 and stayed at 6.3 at 3 months across roughly 310 guests. For 29% of guests it did not hold.
Is a Longer Ayahuasca Experience a Better One?
No, and the question usually means someone is shopping for intensity. A 6 hour night is not worth more than a 4 hour night. The variable that predicts our 3-month outcomes is not how long anyone stayed under. It is whether they did the integration work after they flew home.
How long ayahuasca lasts is the easiest question about it to answer and the least useful one to decide on. 4 to 6 hours of drug, 7 hours in the room, 3 months to the number that counts. If you want to know whether you are cleared for any of it, our physician reads every application before you pay anything, and you can start that conversation here.
